BREAST LIFT

What Is A Breast Lift?

A breast lift or "mastopexy will raise and firm your breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. It's an excellent procedure for restoring sagging breasts to a more youthful placement and tightness. A breast lift is usually a consideration for women who have experienced a loss of volume due to pregnancy or nursing, or have sagging breasts due to age or weight loss.

Why You May Want to Consider A Breast Lift

Post pregnancy.
Breasts can stretch and change in shape during and after pregnancy and/or breast-feeding. You may want to have a breast lift to restore your breasts to their previous position and appearance.

Gravity and Age.
It is inevitable that as we age the effects of gravity can turn perky breasts into droopy breasts, especially if your breasts are full. A breast lift can restore your shape and lift your spirits as well as your breasts.

Heredity.
Sometimes it seems as if nature is not so fair, and some breasts are just naturally more droopy than others. If you have always wanted to change the way that your breasts sit on your body, now might be the time to make the change and have the breast shape you've always hoped for.

Weight loss.
If you've lost a lot of weight, congratulations! But if most women who lose a good bit of weight will also find that they've lost weight in their breasts, too. Your breasts may now droop or sag in a way they didn't before. A breast lift can change that!

What Will the Procedure Be Like?

Your breast lift surgery is an out-patient procedure, but that doesn't mean that it is minor surgery, or that it will be brief. After your consultation and examination at his office in Myrtle Beach, Dr. White will be able to estimate the length of time that you can expect your procedure to take. Dr. White will want to take his time and make sure that your results are beautiful.

The goal is to raise the nipples and tighten the skin to create fullness. This surgery is less drastic than the reduction, and is done on an outpatient basis. Dr. White will incise your skin, then pull the nipples up prior to closing and applying bandages. Your surgery will be performed while you are under a general anesthetic. Before surgery, you and Dr. White will have discussed the various options for your breast lift procedure.

You and Dr. White will select the technique that is right for you.
Breast lifts can be done in three different ways, and Dr. White will want to be sure to choose the best technique for your surgery. The choice of technique will depend on many factors, including the size of your breasts, the size of your nipples, your body frame and size, and the specific problem that you are trying to solve. These are the possibilities:

Donut Lift
Also known as Circumareolar Lift, this is a technique that is best used for slight nipple asymmetry or a minimal lift. Dr. White will make a doughnut-shaped incision around your areola to remove tissue. Then he will cinch the breast skin to tighten it. Although less effective than the full mastopexy, this technique leaves a much less noticeable scar.

Lollipop Lift
A Lollipop Lift is a Vertical Mastopexy. Using this lift technique, Dr. White will make a lollipop-shaped incision from the crease of your breast, vertically up to and surrounding the nipple. This is an effective lift for many women with sagging, lower hanging breasts.

Anchor Lift
This incision is shaped like an anchor. Though similar to the lollipop, it also requires a horizontal incision along the breast crease. This is the most invasive breast lift procedure, but is very effective for women with extremely droopy, sagging breasts or a long inframammary fold (this is the distance from your breast crease to your nipple).

What Will Recovery Be Like?

Same day.
You will be closely monitored and cared for in our surgery center until you are ready to go home. You'll need someone to drive you home and help you for the first 24 hours after your surgery. When you arrive home, it's important to lie down and rest with pillows to support your back and arms. Make sure that your medications are within easy reach, and have ice packs available to place over your breasts.

First week.
You should expect about 1-3 days of chest discomfort. Some bruising and swelling is normal and expected. Your breasts will settle into place in a few weeks and most patients are able to return to work in 5-7 days.

Six weeks.
You will need to continue to avoid strenuous exercise during this time while you are still healing. Dr. White will want to see you again for a follow-up to check on your progress.

9-12 months.
You'll look and feel great! Any swelling and bruising should be gone, and your scars will be healing nicely and easily concealed. You should be enjoying your new, perky breasts and all of the benefits they bring including fitting better into your bras, swimsuits and even being able to wear those cute, strapless dresses and tops without the worry of looking droopy and saggy.
